How Can My Story Help You Build Your Business
You’re probably wondering how my story can help you in your battle to build your business and achieve successful results on Linkedin?
I never for a minute thought the results I was having in my business were a direct result of my innermost feelings about myself. It was only when I hired a mentor who challenged my thinking about myself, that my eyes were opened to the impact I was having on the business I was running.
It’s an uncomfortable conversation, but your ability to have uncomfortable conversations has a direct impact on your success as a business owner.
That doesn’t just mean conversations with other people, it means being able to have honest conversations with yourself because being uncomfortable means you are able to make progress and get results.
It was only recently that I learned that feeling a failure all my life was still holding me back as an adult. I can look back and see the trail of events which halted my progress in my business – my parent’s separation, being bullied and beaten at school, and growing up in an environment where money was sometimes scarce, all sowed seeds into my subconscious mind.
It wasn’t until I got down to the root of my problems, which ultimately lay in my childhood, that I could learn from it and move forward in my business. Now I’ve learned to draw from my experiences to grow and improve my business, rather than shy away and stay ashamed of who I was.
After leaving University I had no idea what I wanted to do. I had an offer from IBM but it was withdrawn because the company was experiencing difficulties at the time. I eventually found work cold calling to make appointments. I hated it!
Looking back though, it was the best thing that could have happened to me. I had learned the art of lead generation from the best in the industry. I experienced very quickly that the difference between a successful salesperson (or business owner) and their failure was their ability to generate business from nothing.
That’s generating business without using fancy software that costs thousands of dollars, by simply using a telephone and Linkedin – without ad spends, webinars or professional copy. If anyone can master that, they’ll never be without clients. They’ll never be solely relying on referrals.
If I’d have had Linkedin back in 2003 it would’ve really changed my life. I was making cold calls and was lucky to make an appointment every couple of days.
I progressed from cold calling and started selling vending machines; I went from generating leads over the phone to acquiring them in person. I learned very quickly that I was very good at lead generation and ended up working for corporate companies.
I sold to big businesses in London, selling huge projects. I progressed quickly and I learned a lot until I was made redundant. It hit me hard, but as I look back at my life I can see it was the best thing that could have happened to me. It taught me that the corporate environment was not a safe place to work in. Again I felt a failure but I found another job making big money from huge deals.
I learned consultative selling and got buy-ins. They were real, complex technology B2B deals which impacted multiple people within the business. The trouble was that I hated it. I loved the money but I hated my job and I used to dread the week ahead. The pressure of losing a big deal meant I could be kicked out the door and I hated the pressure within the corporate world.
My mindset suffered and I wasn’t enjoying my life. I started linking the outcome of failure to my own self-worth and it was having a detrimental effect on my life. I realized I didn’t want to do that for the rest of my life. I became unwell and my body was permanently tense.
This lead to me waking up one morning and quitting my job.
I had no plan so I took a year out which lead to me arriving in Columbia. I tried a couple of businesses which failed, and in turn, left me feeling a failure again.
It wasn’t until 2017 that I decided to invest the last of my savings in getting help from Simon Lovell, my mentor. I decided I wanted to control everything in my life and in my business, and I knew I couldn’t get success until I had help. I was on a call with him and for the first time I felt certainty from someone else that I was not a failure and I could build a successful online business.
Simon took me back to the things I knew and I was good at. These included Linkedin and B2B. I knew both of these would get me results, lead generation, and client acquisition – all the things I had previously stayed away from because of all the unhappy memories I had associated with them.
My business started moving very quickly and I started getting amazing results for business owners and entrepreneurs. Getting over my fear of rejection had enabled my business to boom!
I’m a very different person now and I feel amazing knowing that I’m in a position to help change the lives of other people. It doesn’t matter what your experiences are or what your background is, you are able to draw on those experiences for the benefit of your business.
Remember anything is possible because you are always moving forward, growing and learning for yourself and your business.
