Have you ever found yourself feeling stuck? Have you ever though to yourself that you don’t fit it? Maybe you look like you fit in from the outside, but inside you don’t really feel like you fit in?

If any of this resonates with you then this talk is for you.

I know of Marianne Cantwell from her Book

Key Points

Specialist v Generalist

This talk is for people who are good at looking like we fit into the different worlds we move in

Marianne was told at 16, by her teacher that she was a generalists but the world rewards specialists

So she thought to thrive as an adult, focus on one thing and be good at it

Do the university thing, graduate and rise up the ladder

But she felt stuck

Fixing it

All advice was the usual cliches – find your tribe, look for your one big passion

But what if you don’t really fit in in one place and you have never seen that

In short this didn’t work

So find a place where you are not squished in a box

We are told that we live in a black and white world, game is to get good at one thing – What will you be good at when you grow up

Graham Green said human nature is not black and white, but white and gray

Are you a liminal person?

Liminal – describes a state – not quite one thing or another, on the borderland. It describes Marianne

  • Sex and the City cuddling behavioural economics and she loves that variety
  • Inbetween worlds, like vampires, not alive or dead
  • No mistake that over the past few years, cult TV
  • We watch what we want to be
  • World of black and white messages, in and out? You will see the messages in every culture
  • You will see it everywhere
  • Then we go back to real life – be one thing – fit in your box
  • Millions of us are doing this

Create your own island, don’t live on a continent

  • The alternative I create your own island where
  • Takes the best of your world and a foot in all the great ones that you fit in
  • Business strategy for people that do their own thing
  • Your island could be populated by the fact you are sensitive, sprinkle of travel lust, story telling
  • That is Marianne’s island
  • You don’t find your place, you create it, as a liminal person
  • Isn’t this a compromise?
  • Bridging worlds
  • Some people feel shame
  • A work around for wierdness, better not to be like this in the first place
  • Same traits as leaders, change makers, innovators, creators, what we tell our children to be

Liminal People are successful

Eat, Prey Love

She was the poster girl for digital nomads

Recipe for success

  • No way to predict what will be in demand, except to bridge genres, navigate industries and change, or be liminal
  • Thats what we have already
  • We need people that can straddle borders
  • We need fresh perspectives

Live them

Succeed because of liuminalty, not despite it

You are in good company

Don’t hide true colours

You belong here
